WW1 BRITISH 1907 SMLE BAYONET REGIMENTALLY MARKED TO 5TH ROYAL SCOTS & 7TH ROYAL SCOTS, QUINTINSHILL RAIL CRASH & GALLIPOLI
***FREE WORLDWIDE POSTAGE*** A very good condition, original WW1 British 1907 SMLE Bayonet made by Sanderson and dated 1/15. The pommel has 2 very interesting unit marks: 5th Battalion Royal Scots (cancelled) and then re-issued to 7th Battalion Royal Scots. I had a quick look on the long long trail and found the following information which I thought might be useful.....1/7th Battalion
August 1914 : in Dalmeny Street, Leith. Part of Lothian Brigade, Scottish Coast Defences.
24 April 1915 : transferred to 156th (Scottish Rifles) Brigade, 52nd (Lowland) Division.
A and D Companies were involved in a rail accident at Quintinshill near Gretna on 22 May 1915 while en-route to Liverpool from Larbert in Stirlingshire. 210 men were killed and 224 injured, forming the majority of the 473 casualties of the worst disaster in British railway history.
Sailed from Liverpool 24 May 1915, going via Egypt to Gallipoli 14 June 1915.
Returned to Egypt 8 January 1916.
Moved to France, landing at Marseilles, 17 April 1918.
The pommel, crossguard and tang retain 90% finish with some very light surface rust. The wood grips are very nice and have some light bruising. The blade is in very nice condition with no pitting or damage. The steel mounted leather scabbard is in very good condition with all stitching in tact

The pommel has no clearance hole and is Regimentally marked 3 8 M R 72, thanks to Alan for identifying this marking, it is the 3rd/8th Squadron Mounted Rifles. This is a scarce New Zealand Regimental marking. The pommel, crossguard and tang retain 85% finish. The wood grips are in excellent condition. The blade is in very nice condition with approximately 10% light pitting/staining. The brown steel mounted leather scabbard is in good condition with all stitching in tact. There are a few dashes of white paint on the seam of the scabbard. There are several light scratch marks to the front of the scabbard (see photo)
